Save Your Home in 17 Seconds

House fire
Recently the island has been gripped by a spate of house fires which have left two or three fatalities and many families homeless. The fire in Micoud on June 1, 2015, which started in a workshop and completely destroyed  four houses is the latest tragedy. Are you equipped to handle a fire at your home?  The distance of a fire station, lack of fire hydrants and the scarcity of water combined with this dry weather can be a nightmare for any homeowner if a fire were to start at their home. The first 30 seconds of a fire are are crucial. Get yourself ready - come to Rayneau.

The 6 most common causes of House fires are :
1.   Candles : Candles are often forgotten and can burn out of control
2.    Smoking:  Smoking is a major cause of residential fires. People fall asleep while smoking and set their bed, chair or couch on fire, which can easily result in a fatality.
3. Children: Small children unknowingly playing with fire inside the home are a parent’s worst nightmare. Older kids who know what fire can do – and just want to see what happens – are equally dangerous
4.    Gases:  Home fires are also caused by the propane gas. An errant spark coupled with a small leak can create a combustible situation.
5.    Appliances:  Many of the appliances used in the home ( stoves , microwave, blenders, dryers etc) do generate heat or get heated up after extended use. Cooking utensils left unattended is a frequent cause of avoidable fires.
6.    Electrical: Shoddy electrical work within a home – poorly connected circuits, loose wires, improper grounding – is also a danger that is often unknown to homeowners. Any device that uses electrical power has fire potential. Over-heated lighting equipment comes in at the top of the list.

Many victims of the house fires have openly said that they had to stand by helplessly as they watched their property turn to ashes as they await the fire trucks. This should not be!
The first 30 seconds of a fire are crucial and will determine whether a fire will escalate and be large enough to be a threat to yourself your family or your home.  At Rayneau Construction and Industrial Products (RCIP Ltd) we offer the latest technology in fire extinguishers -  an aerosol Fire Extinguisher, to save your home before a fire takes root -

The Fire Gone Fire Extinguisher is an essential piece of equipment that everybody should possess. This small can, maybe the difference between life and death. According to the St Lucia Fire Service, cooking accidents are the major causes of fire in the home. Yet how many people could  say they would have to had something to fight fire with if this situation arose.

The Fire Gone Fire Extinguisher delivers a strong, targeted stream that goes right to the source of the fire, coating it with fire-fighting foam. The extinguisher can be used on most electric, grease fabric and wood fires. The Fire Extinguisher foam is biodegradable so it is easy to clean up and won’t damage surfaces.

How to use:  Remove the safety tab, aim and pull the trigger. Holding the can 3 to 4 feet from the fire, spray across the base of the flames using gently sweeping motions. The contents of each can lasts about 17 seconds which should be more than enough to put out the fire.

Whether you are at home, in your car or on your boat, stay safe with Fire Gone Fire Extinguisher.

Don’t be caught with your pants down in case a fire comes your way.

3 Sections Of the Banse Road Paved

On Friday May 29, 2015 the asphalt crew of CIE Ltd, working on the Banse/La Haut, Laborie Village Road Project showed true grit as they completed a marathon work session which went way into the wee hours of Saturday morning. Over two Kilometers of road was laid with asphalt and compacted.(Click on video below).

The paving process
CIE Ltd has one of the most modern asphalt plant in the region; there the aggregates are combined to get the desired asphalt mix which is then loaded into the tri-axle trucks for delivery to the site
Before the paving operation starts, loose material is removed on the base material using a blower and/or the dusting machine. Then the tar distributor is used to spray tar on the unpaved surface. This film of tar serves as the prime and tact coats. The coats are then allowed to cure before the actual paving resume. The purpose of having these coats is to prevent any slippage between the surface and overlay during or after the compaction.

To start the paving operation, the paver is positioned properly onto the road. The screed of the paver is lowered onto block of the same depth of the loose asphalt mat that is going to be laid on the road. The hauling truck loads the paver and the paving process begins. The loading truck is always between the oiling truck and the paver.
Paved section of road
As the paver lays the asphalt layer on the oiled base, other workers in the crew spread the hot mix so that it seals the road edges properly. The last process of paving is compaction. During this process the roller with rubber tires compacts the asphalt as soon as the paver lays the mix and the workers level out the road edges.
The three areas that have been paved are 1. Upper Banse, starting from the last residential house to about 700 meters towards Laborie. 2. Another  550 meters at a place along the Banse road called “Farleers My Haut” and finally 1 kilometers from the Marjomel gap towards Laborie.

Many of the residents are relieved. “The dust is no more” a middle aged man remarked. In spite of the frequent watering of the road this was not sufficient to keep the road always moist. Water had to be trucked from the Piaye river to keep the residential areas dust free. A teacher, who mentioned that she understands that development comes with inconvenience remarked, " We can now open our windows once more. That's a highway we have here you know.  I only hope our drivers use this highway sensibly." Another young man, putting his piece as a minibus raced pass by "You see what I talking about", he uttered shaking his head.

During this week it is hoped that most of the Banse road will be paved if not completed. When asked about how near completed the project is, Duplesis, the Ministry's onsite technician remarked, "The work should be completed by August/September." August/September."

Works 75% complete, says Supervisor with CIE Ltd

Road with Base Material
In spite of the drastic impact that the present drought is having on the population, CIE Ltd is taking full advantage of it, in that work is progressing at a breakneck speed. Such progress would not have been possible had the rains come.  According to a works foreman, the work is about 75% complete. The company has as of May 21, 2015 laid base material on approximately 5 km of road in the Banse community.  Base material is the product which is laid prior to laying the asphalt.
“The quality of the work is outstanding.” So says one of the Government's technicians. “The work is far ahead of schedule, and this due to the fact that Rayneau knows what he is doing. We have no complaints so far.” He continued.

While travelling on a mini bus along the newly surfaced and compacted road, there was nothing but praise for the project. The bus driver brought to my attention that  in spite of being a country road, it can be compared to any major road on the island. The road he observed is wider than before, it can accommodate three lanes in most areas and the smoothness of the ride is impeccable.

Another driver expressed his satisfaction to the fact that due to the quality and width of the road, although it is not yet asphalted will definitely reduce the wear and tear on his vehicle plus reducing the travelling time form Laborie village to Banse or La Haut.
Culvert works

According to CIE Ltd engineer Vinay, works for the past two weeks have been concentrated on building of culverts and laying the base on the Banse side and the completion of the major walls on the La Haut side. He mentioned that with the laying of base this means that the laying of asphalt is not far off.

There is no doubt that the work is a state of the art production. The road can now accommodate at least three lanes of traffic in most areas. The quality of the surface is a joy to the motorists. “Now we can make Banse to Laborie in about 5 minutes, the road is smooth and wide and there is less wear and tear on our vehicles. So says a minibus driver, plying the Vieux-Fort/Banse route. “ For over thirty years we have struggled in something that passed for a road, today we have one, if not the best road in the state.” He rushed to add.

It Only Takes 1 Storm.... are you Prepared?

It’s that time again… hurricane season in St Lucia and across the Caribbean! For many of us it is a time we’d prefer to dismiss with predictions below normal , however, with possibly four to six storms, it may be wiser to avoid complacency and prepare.

There are many hurricane forecasters out there but marine professor Lian Xie’s according to NCSU “….. methodology evaluates more than 100 years of historical data on Atlantic Ocean hurricane positions and intensity and variables such as weather patterns and sea-surface temperatures to predict how many storms will form in each ocean basin.” (http://www.wral.com/ncsu-forecasts-quiet-2015-hurricane-season/14579589/#TZBYR6qRt2O4xFRH.99)
“In the Gulf of Mexico this year, his data indicate the likelihood of one to two named storms forming and one becoming a hurricane. In the Caribbean, one to two tropical cyclones may form, with one becoming a hurricane.” Xie continued

The hurricane season starts on June 1 and ends on November 30.

There are several things we can do to be prepared for intense weather systems. Perhaps an appropriate starting place is our homes and properties. After sacrificing large sums to own your preferred dwelling place it is advisable to go a step further and ensure your investment  is adequately protected from harsh elements.
Hardware stores are often crowded when a storm or hurricane is officially announced, so to avoid the rush try to get your required hardware supplies in advance. Tarpaulin, batteries, flashlights, candles, lamps, battery-operated radios and ply board are often foremost on most hurricane preparedness lists. After making your purchase, it is recommended that the items be stored in a safe and accessible area so they can be easily reached should an emergency arise.
Though it is predicted to be very quiet, what are your plans? Close your eyes and recall the pain, devastation and destruction caused by Hurricane Tomas and the last Christmas Trough, then open your eyes and come to the Rayneau Construction & Industrial Products Ltd to get all your hurricane preparedness products and gear.

Update Video Shows Massive Works Underway at La Haut

Update Video of Works: April 15 -30, 2015

Before and present
The period April 15th to 30th, 2015 has revealed a tremendous amount of work on the Banse/La Haut, Laborie Village Main Road Project. Though drainage works are ongoing on the Banse Road, the volume of works done within the two weeks, April 15th - 30th at the La Haut end of the project is breathtaking.(As seen in video) The work is moving at an incredible pace. CIE's works supervisor, Venay said that the project will be completed before Christmas. "We have to move fast on the La Haut side to lay the sub-base before the rain comes, to avoid the mud" he remarked.
Before and present at La haut
Venay, a soft gentle person makes no bones about productivity from his workers. I personally recalled him chastising an operator of a heavy equipment for not producing the volume of work he was supposed to have completed within a specified time. He mentioned that he makes sure that about 60m  and about 1km of road are complete daily.

One huge retaining wall has been completed and two more are nearing the final stages. Many kilometres of drains - Kerb and slipper, as well as the laying of sub-base are continually being done on a daily basis.
