A Year in Review - 2020 - Construction and Industrial Equipment Ltd (CIE)

Against the backdrop of the global Coronavirus pandemic, the projects in 2020 brought new challenges no one was prepared for, changing the way we live and how we connect with each other. Through it all, Rayneau’s photographers, videographers and graphic designers have been there to capture the projects and bring unique perspectives into focus of key moments from various projects both on island and in Dominica.

In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, we want to take a moment to slow down and reflect on 2020 and the year we had at Construction and Industrial Equipment Ltd (CIE). It’s hard to believe that 2020 is almost over, and we are quickly approaching a new year, with new goals, and new partnerships. Before we leave 2020, check out some of the moments that mattered most over the past year.

The review will be structured into two segments - 1. Projects in Dominica and 2. Projects in St Lucia.

                                                        THE DOMINICA SEGMENT

                               Work progress on New Marigot Hospital as of November 2020

In January of this year, we started construction of the $32M, 55,800sq ft., 3-floors of the New Marigot Hospital at Marigot, Dominica. CIE Ltd served as the general contractor for the project, which is due to be completed in April 2021. As the general contractor, CIE Ltd oversees the foundation, building shell, floor slabs, exterior steel structure and walls, and roof, as well as the building interior fit out.

Under Dominica’s Ninth Basic Needs Trust Fund Programme (BNTF 9) we secured three contracts namely:

1 - The Castle Bruce Secondary School production facility which is being will be built at a cost of over $630,000.00 entails the construction of a concrete chicken coop with troughs and feeders. Provision is also made for small cages, hatching pens and breeding pens. The second component is the construction of a concrete slaughter house with a timber and metal roof. We also provide for the installation of waste basins, aluminum tables and knife sanitizers. A washroom facility is also being built.

 2 - The Dominica Community High School Extension project which comes at a cost of $1.2M will consist of two concrete floor structures which will house a resource room, an auditorium, a library and a computer room.

3 - The Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities Development Centre  (DAPD) consists of the construction of a modern and resilient facility for persons with disabilities which is estimated at $900,000.00. This building is designed to serve as a model for other builders to build and create disability friendly facilities.

                    Works on the Roseau Upper River Bank Housing Project as of early December

The Roseau Upper Riverbank Housing Development is like no other. Upon completion, the two buildings will provide 52 residential apartments consisting of a three-bedroom, two-bedroom, and one-bedroom units and 8 commercial units to complete the integrated community concept.

That gives us a total of 60 units [for Upper River Bank]. It is expected that the first block will be completed within a 12-month period and the second block within a 16 month period.

                                                THE ST LUCIA PROJECTS 

Gros Islet and Castries North Roads Project: Under this project CIE Ltd is responsible for the design, finance and construction of 57 roads (totaling 17.5 km), 36 roads in the district of Gros Islet (totaling 12.2 km) and 22 in the district of Castries North (totaling 5.3 km). 

Of these 57 roads, 43 are being constructed with asphalt and the remaining 14 are being constructed in concrete. Along with the pavement construction there will be the associated drainage and retaining wall construction for each road.

PIAT ROAD PROJECT

Mr Gajadhar's Construction and Industrial Equipment Ltd company (CIE Ltd) began work on the  Piat road on June 15, 2020.  This project saw the rehabilitation of the Piat Development roads which consist of 848m of new concrete road pavement.

THE BALATA TO MORNE DUDON ROAD!

The complete rehabilitation of the road from Balata to Morne Du Don got underway in June. The project is coined as the Balata to Morne Du Don to  Road Rehabilitation Project. According to the engineers of CIE Ltd, the Balata to Morne Du Don Road Scope of works entails rehabilitation of 2.737 km of asphalt road pavement.

Our review of 2020 would not be complete if Mr Gajadhar’s philanthropic gestures were not mentioned. Among other humanitarian gestures meted out this year,  these two projects need special mention here: The construction of the Red Cross Building in Vieux Fort and The Chainsaw donation to Special Services unit of the St Lucia Police Force; With regards to the Red Cross Building project was constructed at a heavily discounted price with  zero profit to the company.

HAPPY NATIONAL DAY ST LUCIA FROM RAYNEAU GROUP - STAY SAFE!

We generally celebrate our National Day, December 13th, like any other holiday, by going to the beach, sleeping in, having family gatherings or taking an island tour. With the Corona pandemic now taking its toll on the island it is most likely that this year's celebration will be low-keyed. In previous years it was customary to place lanterns above the entrance of homes and to welcome Saint Lucy’s Day with festival of lights and J’ouvert parade. Not this year!

Every year on December 13th, the island - and we at Rayneau Group of Companies- celebrate the origins of its name on the feast day of St. Lucy known in Latin as Sancta Lucia. 

Originally named Iyanola (Land of Iguanas) by the peaceful Amerindians who arrived between 200 and 400AD, the island was taken over around 800AD by the less peaceful Caribs who translated it to their own version Hewanorra.

Given its third name by the French in the seventeenth century, modern day Saint Lucia continues to celebrate the Feast of St. Lucy of Syracuse who lived from AD 283 – 304. The monks who first brought Christianity to Sweden told the story of a young Christian girl who was martyred for her faith, and Scandinavian countries still widely celebrate St. Lucy's Day.

Similarly to Independence Day, the root of National Day lies in building pride for the country as most St. Lucians wear the national costume or dress in the colours of the flag to commemorate patriotism.

It is also worth noting that National Day also signifies the beginning of our Christmas season  and new beginnings in the days to come.

BEAUTIFY YOUR PROPERTY THIS HOLDIDAY SEASON WITH OUR PRESSURE WASHERS

We also understand that the prospect of such a large cleaning project can be intimidating to some, but allow us to reassure you that you won’t have to spend hours scrubbing by hand in order to beautify your property—instead, you can simply use one of our pressure washers.

 In this article, we’ll go over how to use pressure washers so that you can more easily try out these great tools.

• Preparation- To prepare to clean your home with pressure washers, first make sure that all your windows and doors are shut tight and turn off the electricity to all the exterior outlets. Gather your safety goggles, pressure washer, nozzles, detergent, and other supplies, and then get started.
• Apply Detergent– The first step to cleaning your siding with pressure washers is to apply detergent. Attach the hose to the washer and start it, and then insert the siphon tube into the soap solution and attach the soaping nozzle. Spray the detergent onto your siding from the bottom up, and then let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
• Rinse– As the detergent sits, change the soaping nozzle for the 25 to 40-degree spray tip. Once the time is up, use the washer to rinse all the detergent away, making sure to keep the wand at least one foot away from your siding at all times. Hold the wand perpendicular to the siding and work from the top down this time. The last step is to simply let your siding dry for a few hours.
