PAINT PREP ESSENTIALS: What You Need Before the First Coat
BUILD SMART WITH RAYNEAU
Building Better Starts Here.
On Monday, we made one thing clear:
A good paint job starts before the first coat goes on.
Cracks need attention.
Peeling paint needs to come off.
Dirty walls need cleaning.
Rough surfaces need smoothing.
And some walls need priming before the colour ever touches them.
Today, we move from identifying the problems to choosing the right tools and products to prepare the surface properly.
Because when the preparation is right, the painting becomes easier — and the final finish usually looks better too.
1. SCRAPERS: REMOVE WHAT SHOULD NOT STAY
If old paint is peeling, bubbling or flaking, it needs to come off before you repaint.
A scraper helps remove:
Loose paint
Flaking coatings
Raised material
Old residue
Weak surface layers
Do not simply paint over loose material and hope the new coat holds it together.
Build Smart Tip
Remove only what is loose or failing, then smooth the surrounding edges before moving on.
2. SANDPAPER: SMOOTH THE SURFACE
Once cracks are repaired or loose paint is removed, rough edges may remain.
That is where sandpaper becomes important.
Sanding can help smooth:
Repaired cracks
Filler patches
Rough plaster
Old paint edges
Uneven surfaces
Different surfaces and stages may require different grades of sandpaper.
The goal is not to grind away the wall.
The goal is to create a smoother, more even surface for the next step.
After sanding, always remove the dust.
Paint does not bond well to a wall covered in sanding residue.
3. FILLERS AND PATCHING PRODUCTS: REPAIR BEFORE YOU COVER
Small holes, chips and cosmetic cracks should be repaired before painting.
A suitable filler or patching compound can help create a more even surface.
Good preparation means:
Cleaning the damaged area
Applying the right repair product
Allowing it to dry properly
Sanding it smooth
Priming where necessary
Do not use paint as filler.
Paint finishes the job.
It should not be expected to repair the wall underneath.
4. PRIMER: PREPARE THE SURFACE FOR PAINT
Primer is one of the most important products in a proper paint system.
Depending on the surface, it can help:
Improve adhesion
Seal porous areas
Prepare repaired patches
Reduce uneven absorption
Help cover strong colour changes
Create a more uniform base
Primer is especially worth considering on:
New plaster
Bare masonry
Repaired areas
Previously stained surfaces
Major colour changes
Primer prepares. Paint finishes.
Using the correct one for the surface can make a noticeable difference.
5. MASKING TAPE: KEEP THE EDGES CLEAN
A clean paint job is not only about the wall.
It is also about the lines around:
Doors
Windows
Trim
Switch plates
Skirting
Fixtures
Masking tape can help protect areas you do not want painted and create neater edges.
But tape should be applied properly to a clean, dry surface.
Remove it at the appropriate stage so it does not pull away dried paint or leave rough edges.
Clean lines make the whole job look more professional.
6. BRUSHES, ROLLERS AND TRAYS: USE THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE AREA
A brush and a roller do different jobs.
Brushes
are useful for:
Corners
Edges
Trim
Small areas
Cutting in around openings
Rollers
are useful for:
Larger wall areas
Faster coverage
More even application across broad surfaces
The surface texture and type of paint may affect the roller or brush you choose.
And do not forget the tray.
A proper setup helps control the paint and reduces mess.
The right tool makes the job easier.
7. DROP SHEETS AND PROTECTIVE COVERINGS: PROTECT WHAT YOU ARE NOT PAINTING
Preparation is also about protecting the room.
Before you begin, cover or move:
Furniture
Flooring
Appliances
Fixtures
Anything you do not want splashed
A few minutes spent protecting the area can save a lot of cleaning afterward.
Good painters prepare the room, not just the wall.
THE RIGHT ORDER MATTERS
A useful sequence is:
SCRAPE → REPAIR → SAND → CLEAN → PRIME → MASK → PAINT
That order helps you avoid doing the same job twice.
For example:
Do not prime before repairing cracks.
Do not paint before sanding filler.
Do not sand and then leave the dust on the wall.
Preparation works best when each step supports the next.
DO NOT BUY EVERYTHING JUST BECAUSE IT IS ON THE SHELF
This is one of the most important lessons in Build Smart with Rayneau.
Start with the condition of the wall.
Ask:
What is wrong with this surface?
What needs to be removed?
What needs to be repaired?
Does it need sanding?
Does it need primer?
What tools are appropriate for the job?
Buy for the job in front of you.
That saves money and helps you work more efficiently.
WEDNESDAY’S BUILD SMART RULE
PREP WITH PURPOSE. PAINT WITH CONFIDENCE.
A smoother wall, cleaner surface and properly prepared base can make all the difference once the paint starts going on.
And remember:
The finish you see depends heavily on the preparation you do not see.
