Every year on August 1, Saint Lucians pause to honour one of the most defining moments in our nation's history—Emancipation Day. It is a day of remembrance, reflection and gratitude as we pay tribute to the men, women and children whose resilience, courage and unwavering spirit helped shape the society we proudly call home today.
The abolition of slavery in 1834 did not instantly erase hardship, but it marked the beginning of a journey towards dignity, opportunity and self-determination. The freedoms we enjoy today were built upon the sacrifices of countless ancestors who dreamed of a better tomorrow, even when they could not yet see it.
Their legacy continues to inspire us.
