THE MINISTER OF HOUSING LAUDS CIE FOR PROGRESS ON THE BOX PARK PROJECT

Since winning the bid for the construction of the Box Park, Construction and Industrial Equipment Ltd (CIE) has been making amazing progress on the project which is due to be completed by February 2024.

Proposed Box Park
On Thursday, August 31, 2023, Parliamentary Representative for Central Castries and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Housing and Local Government, Richard Frederick, executed a walkthrough on the site of the construction of a Box Park which is currently underway in the city to update, appraise his Ministry of the progress CIE is making.

The Castries Market Redevelopment (Box Park), includes the following:

  • Earthworks: Excavation and Filling Works
  • Construction of two-storey building w/ reinforced concrete frame, first-floor slab, and converted containers at first-floor level
  • Exterior works comprising concrete walkways and stormwater drainage works
  • Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, and Fire Fighting Equipment Installations..

The Rep wasted no time in expressing his complete satisfaction with the work progress he was witnessing at the site. “I am happy and pleased with Rayneau’s progress so far…Well, I know this is a man once he is on a project you can sleep well. I am pleased that he is the one executing, he’s on target, he’s on time, and I know we will get the finished product in the time that was allocated for the termination of this project,” the Parliamentary Representative remarked.

The Box Park is one of several components of the Castries Market Redevelopment and falls under the second phase of the redevelopment plan aimed at modernizing the city’s competitiveness. The project aims to improve the overall presentation and the quality of service offered by micro-entrepreneurs conducting business at this location.

The Box Park will be a two-storey rectangular structure designed with the intention of meeting the needs of tenants offering a diverse range of services. The ground floor will feature the following: sixteen (16) convenience shops, eight (8) fish vending shops, six (6) meat vending shops, and two (2) toilets with a closet for janitors. The first floor will feature a combination of twelve (12) shops (bars and restaurants), male and female toilets, and dining and circulation spaces.

It is important to note that the structure has been designed to resist lateral loads from seismic forces and hurricane-force winds.

The project is financed by the World Bank, through the OECS Regional Tourism Competitiveness Project (ORTCP). The Project principally aims to improve selected tourist sites in Castries.

In this regard, the Government has identified the Castries City Tourism Product as a priority for Saint Lucia with targeted investment sites and activities aimed at making downtown Castries more pleasant and attractive to tourists as well as to residents of Saint Lucia.
