It Only Takes 1 Storm.... are you Prepared?

It’s that time again… hurricane season in St Lucia and across the Caribbean! For many of us it is a time we’d prefer to dismiss with predictions below normal , however, with possibly four to six storms, it may be wiser to avoid complacency and prepare.

There are many hurricane forecasters out there but marine professor Lian Xie’s according to NCSU “….. methodology evaluates more than 100 years of historical data on Atlantic Ocean hurricane positions and intensity and variables such as weather patterns and sea-surface temperatures to predict how many storms will form in each ocean basin.” (http://www.wral.com/ncsu-forecasts-quiet-2015-hurricane-season/14579589/#TZBYR6qRt2O4xFRH.99)
“In the Gulf of Mexico this year, his data indicate the likelihood of one to two named storms forming and one becoming a hurricane. In the Caribbean, one to two tropical cyclones may form, with one becoming a hurricane.” Xie continued

The hurricane season starts on June 1 and ends on November 30.

There are several things we can do to be prepared for intense weather systems. Perhaps an appropriate starting place is our homes and properties. After sacrificing large sums to own your preferred dwelling place it is advisable to go a step further and ensure your investment  is adequately protected from harsh elements.
Hardware stores are often crowded when a storm or hurricane is officially announced, so to avoid the rush try to get your required hardware supplies in advance. Tarpaulin, batteries, flashlights, candles, lamps, battery-operated radios and ply board are often foremost on most hurricane preparedness lists. After making your purchase, it is recommended that the items be stored in a safe and accessible area so they can be easily reached should an emergency arise.
Though it is predicted to be very quiet, what are your plans? Close your eyes and recall the pain, devastation and destruction caused by Hurricane Tomas and the last Christmas Trough, then open your eyes and come to the Rayneau Construction & Industrial Products Ltd to get all your hurricane preparedness products and gear.

Reason # 1: Customer Service

Reason # 2: Quality Products

We make it our duty to stock products that have been tested and proven to give the best service to customers. It is for this reason our products are from some of the world’s top brands, like Makita, Hillman, Chemtron, Harris etc.

Reason # 3: Product Knowledge

Our Customer Sales Representatives understand our products’ features and this allows them to present their benefits accurately and persuasively. We know that customers respond to enthusiastic sale representatives who are passionate about their products and eager to share the benefits with. Routinely every week every CSR must choose a product of his/her choice and describe it to his/her co-workers. This form of weekly training keeps our staff well informed about our products.

Shopping at Rayneau Construction & Industrial Products Ltd creates and supports local jobs. Many of the over 50 workers at the store live in communities not far off. Each time you purchase a product or a service on Main Street, you are helping to pay the salary of a friend or neighbor.

Reason # 7 Team Leader Gives Back

Reports show that Rayneau Gajadhar, owner and Team Leader of the company contributes each year to communities, organizations, clubs and schools, through volunteering, in-kind contributions, and/or direct cash donations. That means your purchase of a good or service at a small business is a great way to “pay it forward.” Recently, Mr Gajadhar renovated the Old Immigration department at the Police Headquarters on Bridge Street. Presently potholing is being carried out on the Morne Le Blanc road all in-kind to the residents.

Rayneau Gajadhar, Team Leader, has made cash donations of over $32,000.00 to towards calypso Improvement, $50,000.00 to the Generation X program, $20,000.00 to the St Lucia Youth Business Trust etc. He has categorically stated that the most important reason for giving tended to be associated with personal satisfaction and fulfillment. The least important reason was direct business benefit.

While concluding this piece I Whats-app a colleague of mine who works in admin:
Me: Give me two reasons why you shop at RCIP Ltd?
Colleague: I always get everything I want.
Me: Hahaha, You playing me? At Rayneau, We’ve got it!

Update Video Shows Massive Works Underway at La Haut

Update Video of Works: April 15 -30, 2015

Before and present
The period April 15th to 30th, 2015 has revealed a tremendous amount of work on the Banse/La Haut, Laborie Village Main Road Project. Though drainage works are ongoing on the Banse Road, the volume of works done within the two weeks, April 15th - 30th at the La Haut end of the project is breathtaking.(As seen in video) The work is moving at an incredible pace. CIE's works supervisor, Venay said that the project will be completed before Christmas. "We have to move fast on the La Haut side to lay the sub-base before the rain comes, to avoid the mud" he remarked.
Before and present at La haut
Venay, a soft gentle person makes no bones about productivity from his workers. I personally recalled him chastising an operator of a heavy equipment for not producing the volume of work he was supposed to have completed within a specified time. He mentioned that he makes sure that about 60m  and about 1km of road are complete daily.

One huge retaining wall has been completed and two more are nearing the final stages. Many kilometres of drains - Kerb and slipper, as well as the laying of sub-base are continually being done on a daily basis.

The Banse/La Haut and Laborie Village Main Road Project on Schedule says CIE Ltd Works Supervisor

Signage
The residents of Banse and La Haut as well as the motorists are already singing praises as they witness works, full speed ahead on the new road project. A commuter who disembarked a bus at the Banse La Grace junction remarked, “The mister, we are very happy to see the road being fixed. And you know one thing, the buses taking us right to our homes now ee. We are happy that Mr Rayneu giving the young people work. We are happy now.” Other residents all echoed the same sentiment.

The Banse/La Haut road has been in a deplorable state for some time now and the residents through expression share their happiness at finally seeing works being done. A good road reduces travel time between communities, as well as expenses on vehicles for the owners.
CIE Ltd Team Leader(center)receiving contract
This project was officially opened at a ceremony last year December and after a short delay work  has recommenced and one driving through the communities will notice gangs of workers busily at work. The Ministry is undertaking this project via the Design Finance Build approach, to improve THE BANSE LA HAUT ROAD & LABORIE VILLAGE MAIN ROAD which is key in the socioeconomic development of the wider Laborie community. The resurfacing and reconstruction exercise will significantly reduce vehicle operating cost and bring greater comfort to motorists and commuters. Improvement to safety is paramount and the completion of the project will lead to greater efficiency in the transportation of goods and people and the provision of services in this part of the island.

Through a process of competitive bidding, Rayneau Gajadhar’s CIE Ltd, emerged the successful bidder. Rayneau will finance the project to completion. The repayment terms are 5.00% annual interest rate with a payment period of 5 years (repayments are to be made by Government of Saint Lucia to the contractor every quarter starting 3 months after completion of works.

The project is 10Km long and CIE Ltd is expected to implement the following:
1.    Drainage structures
2.    Slope Stabilization
3.    Bus stops, laybys and bus shelters
4.    Road markings, signage and road safety furniture
5.    Slope Stabilization
Men setting up a drain

Present status of works

As of April 13, 2015, works on Banse road appears to be concentrated on drainage (box, kerb and slipper and swale), pedestrian sidewalks, laybys and in some instances grading of the road surface. Batches of workers are located at different points along the road digging, building and plastering these drains and sidewalks. Many kilometres of drains works have been completed. Further in many kilometres of roads have been graded and sub-base applied.
On the La Haut side major cutting and grading works, road widening, building of retaining walls, rolling and construction of drains are going on simultaneously.

When asked about the status of the work thus far, Venai, CIE Ltd works supervisor answered, “We’re doing well. We are ahead” What has contributed to the works being ahead of schedule?” I threw at him. “Good management” he boasts. “We put workers all along the road at different locations so everybody is doing something. In this way the work speeds up.” The chief engineer also confirmed that works is on schedule.
Massive retaining wall at La Haut side
A drive through the Morne Le Blanc community, revealed potholing works in progress. Mr Venai informed me that this potholing is being done by CIE Ltd, gratis at no extra cost to the government. Mr Venai said that Mr Gajadhar felt that it would be a good thing to give the people and motorists a bonus. Also, when paving of the Banse  road begins, the motoring public will have no choice but to access the Morne Le Blanc road.

The Banse/La Haut and Laborie Village Main Road will be constructed to adopted  traffic speed of 32 Kph.

Check Video for more pics.
