LA GUERRE AND VIDE BOUTEILLE PRIMARY SCHOOLS HEADING FOR A TIMELY COMPLETION SAYS CIE OFFICIAL.

"Since our last update, we have made great progress towards the completion of both schools." So says Jeffery McKie, an architect employed with Construction and Industrial Equipment (CIE) Ltd.

La Guerre:

Mr. McKie continued, "All major site works have been completed, including retaining and perimeter walls. Construction of the septic tank and soaraway is expected to begin this week along with the continuous works on the drainage systems.

The main entrance stairs to the building have been completed while work continues on the construction of the disabled ramps which will allow for disabled access to the ground and first floor of the school.

Most structural works have been completed including the casting of the reinforced concrete roof. Attention is now being the shift to finishes including the rendering of walls, making good the openings for doors and windows, tiling of washrooms, and priming of walls in preparation for painting."

Vide Bouteille:

As for the Vide Bouteille School, Mr. Mckie explains, "We have seen the completion of the long-awaited, reinforced concrete sloped roof with also signifies the completion of most of the structural works which, as in La Guerre, attention is now being focused on finishes, rendering of walls, installation of bathroom tiles, etc. Some classrooms have already been painted with the first coat of paint. Parts of the exterior have also been painted for review and approval.

Formworks are being erected for the construction of the disabled ramps which will allow for disabled, access from the ground floor to the first floor and the second floor.

All the necessary site surveys and levels have been taken,  making way for works to begin on, the driveway, parking, pedestrian-access-walk installation, and other site work.

All doors and windows, plumbing fixtures, and electrical fittings are available for installation in both schools once the major finishes have been completed."

The race is on to see which of the two buildings will be completed first. Though site works started with the La Guerre School, it appears that the Vide Bouteille School is leading ahead. "Nevertheless, both schools are expected to be complete and ready for the new school year," Mr. McKie pronounces with optimism.

SECURE YOUR HOME BEFORE A STORM WITH THESE 4 TIPS

Today marks the official start of the hurricane season! Preparedness is key to weathering the storm safely. What can you as a homeowner do to protect your home from possible storm damage?

In an earlier post, we mentioned that weather forecasters predict the 2022 hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30, will be an explosive one, with 19 storms, and 9 hurricanes, of which  4 are expected to be major hurricanes.  

Forecasters have no idea where the storms/hurricanes will make landfall. Also, take note of the fact that it takes only one storm to wreak havoc on your home. Making sure that your property is as safe as possible includes making sure that you take precautions both inside and outside your home.

You are encouraged to complete these simple preparations before hurricane season peaks.

Protect your roof:

If you have a gabled roof, you'll want to strengthen the gabled end walls, as they can take a tremendous beating during a storm. Consider hurricane straps to ensure your roof is bolted to the rest of your house. And inspect your galvanize, roof tiles, or shingles to make sure they are secure. Use roofing cement to fix any loose tiles to prevent them from becoming lethal projectiles during a storm and damaging the underlying roofing material. Seal any areas where wires enter the home, minimizing the chance of water damage during heavy wind and rain. 

 Secure Doors and windows:

If your home is in danger of being hit by a hurricane, protecting windows and sliding glass doors is amongst the most important measures to take to shield your house from extensive damage. Broken windows can let in wind and rain, and they can also increase the pressure under the roof. If this happens, the walls collapse, and the house is lost.

Storm shutters provide the best protection, but boarding up windows with plywood when a storm is on the way, can also help. Our customer sales representative in the Building Materials Department recommends using a 3/4 inch plywood cut to fit and secure with screws 18 inches apart around the windows. 

It is also important to find someone who will install the covers if you are unable to put them up yourself. And it’s important to secure windows and doors at all sides of the home -- not just the one facing the body of water where hurricanes could form -- because hurricanes can swirl in any direction. 

Trim Trees:

Not all damage occurring during a storm is a result of high winds alone. Property damage can also be a result of falling trees and flying landscape debris. Make sure that there are not any dead sections on your trees threatening the home or a neighbour’s. High winds and heavy rain can wreak havoc on weak and stressed trees, causing branches to snap or trees to uproot.  Too often, we think of hurricane preparation solely in terms of stocking up on food and bottled water. If overhanging trees are trimmed in anticipation of the heavy winds, the damage and the clean-up would be much easier. Are your trees ready for the next storm?

Make Sure You're Covered:

Make sure you have the right amount of insurance and fill in a few key gaps in coverage. 

In order to safeguard your home's value, you should make sure that you have homeowner’s insurance, flood insurance, and, in some cases, wind insurance. Homeowner's insurance usually covers wind damage and other hurricane-related losses. In some cases, it is also possible to insure the house contents as well. Talk to your insurance broker about your needs.

To make sure that you get the most protection out of your policy, you should be sure to take inventory of and document your belongings and property before the onset of a storm.

“A lot of people demonstrate when things are bad, but when things get better you don’t see or hear them.” These were the words uttered by Stephen Albert in an interview with Loop St Lucia News he again, this time not protesting, but expressing his gratitude.

Stephen Albert aka Challenger, according to the article which was posted on May 18, 2022, thanked Construction and Industrial Equipment (CIE) Ltd for a job well done on the St Jude’s Highway which was recently completed. “I would like to thank Rayneau Construction [CIE] and the Government of St Lucia for a job well done,” He told the news agency.

 It was this very gentleman who staged a one-man protest back in December 2021 about the horrible conditions of St Jude’s Highway then.

ANOTHER EXPLOSIVE HURRICANE SEASON IN THE TAP FOR 2022 – BE PREPARED!

Hello, it’s that time again…….hurricane season in St Lucia and across the Caribbean! For many of us it is a time we’d prefer to dismiss. St Lucians are warned that after an active 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, many forecasters predict that the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season will again be “above-average” with major hurricanes making landfall.

According to the 2022 North Atlantic Hurricane Season forecast prepared by Colorado State University, which is headed by Dr. Phil Klotzbach, a total of 19 tropical storms with winds of at least 39 mph (63 kph) and nine hurricanes with winds of at least 74 mph have been predicted. The season officially starts on June 1.

But we must inform you that forecasters have no idea where the storms/hurricanes will make landfall. Also take note of the fact that it takes only one storm to wreak havoc to your home; therefore, you need to be on your guard.

There is an old saying: When entering a hurricane season, the longer it’s been since we had a hurricane, the closer we are to the next one, meaning it’s a good thing to practice what Boys’ Scouts do – that is BE PREPARED!

Take time to think about it, see what you can do, what are you going to do? Now don’t worry about all the hype that you will hear when the hurricane season just starts - everybody will be talking about it. It’s going to be several months before the entire system warms up and after a while the hurricanes become potentially stronger and stronger and more frequent.

So we do have a little bit of time, but this is the opportunity you have to decide what you have to do. Making sure that your property is as safe as possible includes making sure that you take precautions both inside and outside your home.
