Your home is your castle...or is it? Is your home really safe once you leave for work or school? Your
home is considered a sanctuary where you should feel safe. Your home is the only
environment where you have control over who can get close to you or your
family. Protecting your home and family from criminal intrusion should be high
on your list of priorities.
When you look at your family, and your home, you know you want
them to be safe, always out of harm’s way. When you leave for work, you expect
to come back to a smiling family, and to a home that is secure. But as they
say, hope is not a strategy.
The growing crime rate across the country reflects the bitter reality. Many people overlook, ignore, and underestimate the need of taking appropriate home security measures. A burglary or theft can lead to devastating consequences, both emotionally and financially. While the financial loss may be recoverable, the trauma inflicted on your family and yourself may last forever. So take a minute and think about this; is this loss worth the risk?
Head of the Crime Intelligence Unit, Inspector Eddie Monlouis, told reporters during the police commissioner’s quarterly press conference on July 17, 2014, that 27% of crimes committed were property crimes. He went on to say that in spite of this figure which reveals a 12% drop from 2013, it is still a major concern for the police department. The statistics represent the period January to May 2014.

“Far too many St. Lucians leave their homes, go to work every day,
only to return home to find that their properties have been violated. This is
of concern to the police department and I suppose it is for all St. Lucians
because the 27 per cent can be translated into 15 properties being violated
every day for the period January to May 2014,” he added.
In recent analysis, a reliable source at the Research and
Development Unit of the Royal St Lucia Police Force informed this blog
that for the for the first half of 2015, 2482 cases
of crimes against properties have been reported with 811 being detected. 501
and 92 cases are reported and detected burglaries respectively, while attempted
and aggravated burglaries amounted to 76 cases in both the reported and
detected categories. Burglars continue to
flourish because according to the report
on the first quarter of 2015, police were able to only detect about 32% of all
reported burglaries and rarely catch the thief in the act.
- Tall trees can be accessories to crime when dense branches come close to your home and create pockets of darkness where burglars can hide. Keep trees well-trimmed to avoid giving thugs a place to hang out and keep hedges low and plantings near doors and windows neat and transparent.
Ultra security dead bolt |
- No matter which lock you choose, it’s only as strong as the door itself, which is generally weakest around the lock. You can upgrade your locking system by adding a surface-mount, rim-mount or vertical deadbolt lock. Better yet, choose a front door with a multi-point locking system that engages the door frame at three points instead of just one.
- Windows can be the weakest link in home security, especially if left open and unattended. Make sure all units are closed and locked before you leave home for even the shortest errand, and add window dressings and shades to discourage prying eyes. Security bars on ground-level windows are also an option, but make sure they’re fitted with quick-release mechanisms that allow them to be opened from the inside in an emergency.
Solar light security |
- Low-cost, high-technology home security systems incorporating infrared motion detection, remote controls and easy-to-install door and window break-in sensors are available for application in apartments and small homes
- A well-lit home is much less likely to be broken into, so make sure your home's exterior is fully illuminated with motion-detector spotlights and other strategic outdoor lighting fixtures.
