A Year in Review - 2020 - Construction and Industrial Equipment Ltd (CIE)

Against the backdrop of the global Coronavirus pandemic, the projects in 2020 brought new challenges no one was prepared for, changing the way we live and how we connect with each other. Through it all, Rayneau’s photographers, videographers and graphic designers have been there to capture the projects and bring unique perspectives into focus of key moments from various projects both on island and in Dominica.

In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, we want to take a moment to slow down and reflect on 2020 and the year we had at Construction and Industrial Equipment Ltd (CIE). It’s hard to believe that 2020 is almost over, and we are quickly approaching a new year, with new goals, and new partnerships. Before we leave 2020, check out some of the moments that mattered most over the past year.

The review will be structured into two segments - 1. Projects in Dominica and 2. Projects in St Lucia.

                                                        THE DOMINICA SEGMENT

Work progress on New Marigot Hospital as of November 2020

In January of this year, we started construction of the $32M, 55,800sq ft., 3-floors of the New Marigot Hospital at Marigot, Dominica. CIE Ltd served as the general contractor for the project, which is due to be completed in April 2021. As the general contractor, CIE Ltd oversees the foundation, building shell, floor slabs, exterior steel structure and walls, and roof, as well as the building interior fit out.

Under Dominica’s Ninth Basic Needs Trust Fund Programme (BNTF 9) we secured three contracts namely:

1 - The Castle Bruce Secondary School production facility which is being will be built at a cost of over $630,000.00 entails the construction of a concrete chicken coop with troughs and feeders. Provision is also made for small cages, hatching pens and breeding pens. The second component is the construction of a concrete slaughter house with a timber and metal roof. We also provide for the installation of waste basins, aluminum tables and knife sanitizers. A washroom facility is also being built.

2 - The Dominica Community High School Extension project which comes at a cost of $1.2M will consist of two concrete floor structures which will house a resource room, an auditorium, a library and a computer room.

3 - The Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities Development Centre  (DAPD) consists of the construction of a modern and resilient facility for persons with disabilities which is estimated at $900,000.00. This building is designed to serve as a model for other builders to build and create disability friendly facilities.

Works on the Roseau Upper River Bank Housing Project as of early December

The Roseau Upper Riverbank Housing Development is like no other. Upon completion, the two buildings will provide 52 residential apartments consisting of a three-bedroom, two-bedroom, and one-bedroom units and 8 commercial units to complete the integrated community concept.

Among other humanitarian gestures meted out this year,  these two projects need special mention here: The construction of the Red Cross Building in Vieux Fort and The Chainsaw donation to Special Services unit of the St Lucia Police Force; With regards to the Red Cross Building project was constructed at a heavily discounted price with  zero profit to the company.

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve St Lucians and Dominicans with our construction services. We could not be in business for over 25 years if it were not for the support from all of you!

2 Days Left to Give a Gift for Christmas from Rayneau/Navita Designs!

Gift giving is a two-way street, in that giver and receiver experience the shared enjoyment of the exchange.

For us at Rayneau Group of Companies, gift giving supply us with an armload of self-gratification. Gift giving is just one of the many ways you can show a person how you feel. Not just love but gratitude and appreciation as well. I use it as a way to let someone know that I am thinking about them. The smallest, out of the ordinary, unexpected gift, if presented with a smile, will yield the biggest reactions

Gift giving is both a benefit and a help. To give is the same with sharing. And to share is a relaxing act. Not only does it make a bond grow deeper, but it also gives a person the feeling of being kind and happy. Because for most people, to see someone happy multiplies their joy. The joy brings the feeling of goodness to the giver.

Giving gifts is always a problem. If you love someone, you want to make sure you give them something they really want. Ideally, you want to see that look of joyous surprise when they open the gift and even before they say a word, you know it was perfect.

But that doesn't always work.

It’s sad, really. You work so hard to find just the right gift, and then it doesn't fit …or it isn't the right colour … or it was broken in the box … or they already had one … or the design doesn't match what they already have … worst of all, it wasn't what they really wanted.

That’s the worst—to give someone a gift they don’t really want. Nothing makes you feel worse. They unwrap the gift and then there is a short pause—just a microsecond—but in that moment you already know the truth. “Why, it’s beautiful,” they say. But you can see the look in their eyes. You put on a brave front and try again. “Do you really like it?” “Like it? I love it.” But you aren't fooled. It’s not what they wanted. And drop by drop all the joy drains out of Christmas.

Then it came to my mind this week as I thought about the question—if I were going to give someone a gift for Christmas, what would I give him/her that he/she would appreciate? The holidays are upon us - 3 more days till Christmas, which means it's time to get cracking and find some great sentimental gifts for our valued friends and acquaintances.

You know that well decorated food hamper? Or that old aged bottle of whiskey? If you want to be the one who avoid sending those cliched goodies, look no further. We at Rayneau in Corinth (450-7247) Monchy (450-7248) Vide Bouteille (450-7246) or Babonneau (450-5759) branch, as well as Navita Designs in Vide Bouteille (758) 721-8016 or (758)452-0487 have some better ideas for you this year.

Shop These 10 Tools For Your DIY Dad This Holiday Season

We hear it again and again…… "Dads are hard to shop for." Which is funny – as that most of us dads would disagree. The fact is dads are actually very easy to please – we just ask for the best.

The seven months between Father's Day and the Christmas holidays are enough time to put a serious beating on dad's tools. It's a good thing his loved ones are caring enough to take this time to replace the most worn and destitute tools - or to buy him something he's always wanted.

Well – you’re in luck. Finding gifts for dads at Rayneau is now a breeze with the short listed list below. We’ve sorted through all of the gifts in our hand tools stock and present to you 10 Christmas gifts for dads that they are sure to smile about for months to come.

Enjoy!

Mintcraft 4-in-1 Double Box Ratcheting Wrench Set, Metric Black, 2-Piece: While not “all-in-one ratchet wrenches offer eight fastener sizes that cover most DIYers and homeowner needs, with the robust reversible ratcheting mechanisms, these wrenches will make light work of dad’s projects.

This tool provides a smooth profile and unbroken surface allows more torque to be applied comfortably. It is able to tackle the following sizes: 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19 m

Stanley 84-024 10-inc:h Bi-Material Groove Joint Pliers Wrench: This tool is the Popeye of pliers and quick-adjust wrenches. It may be small but is capable of exerting a surprisingly high level of nut-gripping leverage. Use its marring parallel jaws on finished components, or show a stubborn fasteners who’s boss.

This tool replaces the need for sets of metric and imperial spanners and is also excellent for gripping, holding, pressing and bending work pieces.Your dad would love to use this for his next plumbing project.

Ergonomic Screwdrivers are easy on the hands even when torquing down on screws. They have cushioned handles that conform to users’ unique grips, making them comfortable to hold and use.

These tools can be very comforting to dads who have arthritis in their hands

Mintcraft Multi Tool: This multi tool from Mintcraft is packed with useful gadgets that Dad can use for fixing things around the house, and it’s just nice to have in case something breaks. Rather than carry around a big toolbox, or have to store a bunch of tools, he can have many of the things he needs all in one place with this.

Makita Cordless Drill: This drill is sure to help dad with all sorts of tasks around the home. It features plenty of power to get most of the jobs done. Ask any dad and they’ll tell you that your drill is the cornerstone of what you can get done when it comes to DIY projects

Portable Charcoal Grill Set: This grill set is made out of a durable metal so it’s going to hold up to wear and tear from regular use, and provide Dad with everything he needs to be master of the grill. If Dad loves to grill all the season long he will definitely get tons of use from this.

Stanley Level: A good level is a great gift.  Just make sure you give him a picture of yourself.  So when he opens the picture and the level, you can tell him you just want him to make sure your picture is level on the wall.

Stanley work platform step stool: Simple. Sturdy. Functional. This tool comes with a Slip resistant step treads for security, a one hand fold and lock release and a deluxe molded utility tray for tool and paint tray and pails.

Gets the job done. And you can make a “getting older” crack with it, if you and your dad have that kind of relationship.

Proline Extension Chords: Instead of the usual, cumbersome extension cords he’s used to, get him this retracting extension cord reel. An impressive 30-foot cord easily pulls out and locks at whatever length his project requires, and it automatically retracts when he’s done. He’ll also love how easily it stores, unlike his typical extension cords.

Vampliers: Stripped and rusty screws are a major frustration for the handy man and DIY dad. However, they’re a common enough occurrence, so give Dad the tool he needs in order to handle stubborn screws like a pro.

We tried to keep the list to a minimum, but the truth is we could go on and on. There are so many great hand/power tools at Rayneau that you could give dad for Christmas, it was hard to stop.  I know you could think of about 10 items we missed, but let us know

So hurry on down to Rayneau at the Corinth (450-7247) Monchy (450-7248) Vide Bouteille (450-7246) or Babonneau (450-5759) branch, and choose the ideal gift for Dad from our wide  selection.

HAPPY NATIONAL DAY ST LUCIA FROM RAYNEAU GROUP - STAY SAFE!

We generally celebrate our National Day, December 13th, like any other holiday, by going to the beach, sleeping in, having family gatherings or taking an island tour. With the Corona pandemic now taking its toll on the island it is most likely that this year's celebration will be low-keyed. In previous years it was customary to place lanterns above the entrance of homes and to welcome Saint Lucy’s Day with festival of lights and J’ouvert parade. Not this year!

Every year on December 13th, the island - and we at Rayneau Group of Companies- celebrate the origins of its name on the feast day of St. Lucy known in Latin as Sancta Lucia.

Originally named Iyanola (Land of Iguanas) by the peaceful Amerindians who arrived between 200 and 400AD, the island was taken over around 800AD by the less peaceful Caribs who translated it to their own version Hewanorra.

Given its third name by the French in the seventeenth century, modern day Saint Lucia continues to celebrate the Feast of St. Lucy of Syracuse who lived from AD 283 – 304. The monks who first brought Christianity to Sweden told the story of a young Christian girl who was martyred for her faith, and Scandinavian countries still widely celebrate St. Lucy's Day.

Similarly to Independence Day, the root of National Day lies in building pride for the country as most St. Lucians wear the national costume or dress in the colours of the flag to commemorate patriotism.

It is also worth noting that National Day also signifies the beginning of our Christmas season  and new beginnings in the days to come.

The Rayneau Group of Companies wishes Saint Lucia a wonderful and celebratory National Day 2020! Please follow the protocols established by the Ministry of Health. #StaySafe

12 HOME DIY PROJECTS TO DO BEFORE THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Whether you are planning a casual party, a festive gathering, or a combination of both during the holidays, it can be helpful to finish DIY home projects before holiday season sets in. These easy projects can make a big difference to welcoming guests or friends, presenting your home at its very best, and ensuring a smooth and enjoyable holiday for you and everyone who visits your home.

You know your entire home’s quirks and how to deal with its personality, from a sticky lock to a fussy toilet. It can be very annoying if you have a squeaking fan, flickering lightbulb, or sticky doors, distracting, or creating a nuisance. Fortunately, these projects are very easy to fix and improve before your holiday season.

1.    Running Toilet: A toilet that constantly runs or has a weak flush can be problematic for your holiday guests. Instead of asking guests to jiggle the handle or adjust their bathroom habits, fix the toilet so it is in perfect working order just when there will be more people who need to use it.

2.    Dripping Faucet:  A leaky faucet not only wastes water and creates stains in the sink, but can be noisy for guests who aren’t used to its constant rhythm. A new aerator or refreshed seal will quickly fix a faucet so it doesn’t drip on your guests’ enjoyment of the holiday.

3.    Sticky Door: A door that constantly sticks can be aggravating, but it doesn’t have to be aggravating to fix. Quickly sand down the edges of the door to help it fit in the frame more smoothly so there doesn’t need to be any banging or yanking when it opens and closes.

4.    Low Lighting: Whether you have dark spots in your home because of burned out bulbs or weak lighting fixtures, a new or stronger bulb can brighten up the area in an instant. Add night lights near stairs and in bathrooms as well, just to be sure your guests have enough light to see.

5.    Dirty Appliances: To help your holiday meals taste their very best, take the time to thoroughly clean your kitchen appliances, including the refrigerator, oven, stovetop, and microwave. With all appliances clean, you’ll be ready for the tastiest meals and snacks of the year.

6.    Cluttered Surfaces: Freshen up your surfaces – shelves, counters, mantles, furniture tops, etc. – by clearing away clutter. Recycle old papers, discard loose trash, and stash trinkets and knick-knacks away for the season to create a cleaner, more eye-pleasing space for your guests to enjoy.

7.    Household Odors:  You can quickly get used to your home’s smells, whether odors are from recently cooked food, old upholstery, litter boxes, pets, gym shoes, or any other sources. Open windows to clear out stale air, clean up after pets, and deodorize furniture so it is fresh when your guests arrive.

8.    Dirty Window Coverings:  Whether you have draperies, blinds, or shutters, window coverings can and do gather dust, making the view from your windows less festive. Dust or wash window coverings as needed, and if possible, wash the windows as well for the best views.

9.    Squeaking Hinges Over time, all doors can sag and stick, squeaking and creaking every time they’re opened. Oiling the hinges is a fast fix that will help every door move more easily without announcing to everyone in the house that a door has been opened.

10. Dirty Doormat Your front entryway is the first impression your guests receive when they visit, and a dirty doormat does not offer a friendly welcome. Choose a new holiday welcome mat for a festive touch, and clean the entryway carefully so it is neat and welcoming.

11. Overall Dirtiness:  Just before holidays, give your home a thorough cleaning. Scrub the bathrooms, wash countertops, run the dishwasher, do laundry, dust shelves, and vacuum floors so everything is fresh and ready.

12. Decorations:  Get into the holiday spirit by already having your holiday decorations out and festively adorning your home. A wreath, twinkle lights, centerpieces, and other ornamentation will make your home feel like a great place for everyone to celebrate.

While you may not have time to finish all these DIY home projects before holiday season, if you only manage a few chores and some simple steps, your guests /friends will feel more welcome and the holidays will be more enjoyable for everyone in your home.

Shop Rayneau at the Corinth (450-7247) Monchy (450-7248) Vide Bouteille (450-7246) or Babonneau (450-5759) branch, for all your holiday season DIY projects’ materials and experience the convenience of shopping for everything under one roof.
