Works 75% complete, says Supervisor with CIE Ltd

Road with Base Material
In spite of the drastic impact that the present drought is having on the population, CIE Ltd is taking full advantage of it, in that work is progressing at a breakneck speed. Such progress would not have been possible had the rains come.  According to a works foreman, the work is about 75% complete. The company has as of May 21, 2015 laid base material on approximately 5 km of road in the Banse community.  Base material is the product which is laid prior to laying the asphalt.
“The quality of the work is outstanding.” So says one of the Government's technicians. “The work is far ahead of schedule, and this due to the fact that Rayneau knows what he is doing. We have no complaints so far.” He continued.

While travelling on a mini bus along the newly surfaced and compacted road, there was nothing but praise for the project. The bus driver brought to my attention that  in spite of being a country road, it can be compared to any major road on the island. The road he observed is wider than before, it can accommodate three lanes in most areas and the smoothness of the ride is impeccable.

Another driver expressed his satisfaction to the fact that due to the quality and width of the road, although it is not yet asphalted will definitely reduce the wear and tear on his vehicle plus reducing the travelling time form Laborie village to Banse or La Haut.
Culvert works

According to CIE Ltd engineer Vinay, works for the past two weeks have been concentrated on building of culverts and laying the base on the Banse side and the completion of the major walls on the La Haut side. He mentioned that with the laying of base this means that the laying of asphalt is not far off.

There is no doubt that the work is a state of the art production. The road can now accommodate at least three lanes of traffic in most areas. The quality of the surface is a joy to the motorists. “Now we can make Banse to Laborie in about 5 minutes, the road is smooth and wide and there is less wear and tear on our vehicles. So says a minibus driver, plying the Vieux-Fort/Banse route. “ For over thirty years we have struggled in something that passed for a road, today we have one, if not the best road in the state.” He rushed to add.

It Only Takes 1 Storm.... are you Prepared?

It’s that time again… hurricane season in St Lucia and across the Caribbean! For many of us it is a time we’d prefer to dismiss with predictions below normal , however, with possibly four to six storms, it may be wiser to avoid complacency and prepare.

There are many hurricane forecasters out there but marine professor Lian Xie’s according to NCSU “….. methodology evaluates more than 100 years of historical data on Atlantic Ocean hurricane positions and intensity and variables such as weather patterns and sea-surface temperatures to predict how many storms will form in each ocean basin.” (http://www.wral.com/ncsu-forecasts-quiet-2015-hurricane-season/14579589/#TZBYR6qRt2O4xFRH.99)
“In the Gulf of Mexico this year, his data indicate the likelihood of one to two named storms forming and one becoming a hurricane. In the Caribbean, one to two tropical cyclones may form, with one becoming a hurricane.” Xie continued

The hurricane season starts on June 1 and ends on November 30.

There are several things we can do to be prepared for intense weather systems. Perhaps an appropriate starting place is our homes and properties. After sacrificing large sums to own your preferred dwelling place it is advisable to go a step further and ensure your investment  is adequately protected from harsh elements.
Hardware stores are often crowded when a storm or hurricane is officially announced, so to avoid the rush try to get your required hardware supplies in advance. Tarpaulin, batteries, flashlights, candles, lamps, battery-operated radios and ply board are often foremost on most hurricane preparedness lists. After making your purchase, it is recommended that the items be stored in a safe and accessible area so they can be easily reached should an emergency arise.
Though it is predicted to be very quiet, what are your plans? Close your eyes and recall the pain, devastation and destruction caused by Hurricane Tomas and the last Christmas Trough, then open your eyes and come to the Rayneau Construction & Industrial Products Ltd to get all your hurricane preparedness products and gear.

Presently potholing is being carried out on the Morne Le Blanc road all in-kind to the residents.

Update Video Shows Massive Works Underway at La Haut

Update Video of Works: April 15 -30, 2015

Before and present
The period April 15th to 30th, 2015 has revealed a tremendous amount of work on the Banse/La Haut, Laborie Village Main Road Project. Though drainage works are ongoing on the Banse Road, the volume of works done within the two weeks, April 15th - 30th at the La Haut end of the project is breathtaking.(As seen in video) The work is moving at an incredible pace. CIE's works supervisor, Venay said that the project will be completed before Christmas. "We have to move fast on the La Haut side to lay the sub-base before the rain comes, to avoid the mud" he remarked.
Before and present at La haut
Venay, a soft gentle person makes no bones about productivity from his workers. I personally recalled him chastising an operator of a heavy equipment for not producing the volume of work he was supposed to have completed within a specified time. He mentioned that he makes sure that about 60m  and about 1km of road are complete daily.

One huge retaining wall has been completed and two more are nearing the final stages. Many kilometres of drains - Kerb and slipper, as well as the laying of sub-base are continually being done on a daily basis.
