Section of devastation in Carriacou |
The island of
Carriacou in Grenada has been virtually “flattened” by the devastating
Hurricane Beryl, a senior UN official reported. Humanitarian teams, including
Rayneau, have ramped up their support to communities affected by this
unprecedented disaster. "The entire island is completely affected … that
is literally 100 percent of the population," said Simon Springett, UN
Resident Coordinator in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.
When Hurricane Beryl made landfall as a Category 4 storm, its catastrophic effects were most severely felt in the Grenadian islands of Carriacou. The storm strengthened to a Category 5, pummeling everything along its path. Roofs of schools were ripped off, homes crumbled, and trees were stripped of almost every leaf. With about 10,000 inhabitants on the island, the devastation left no one untouched.
Mr Gajadhar |
The islanders are
in dire need of everything, from food and water to tents and baby formula for
their youngest members. Mr. Rayneau Gajadhar, CEO of Rayneau Group of Companies Ltd., deeply concerned about the plight of
those affected, particularly the most vulnerable—children and women—pledged
unwavering support. Recognizing the urgent need, Mr. Gajadhar
authorized a rapid response team to aid the people of Carriacou.
Under the
supervision of Sunil Kumar Pal, a Project Manager, Rayneau Grenada stepped up to the plate, deploying a
fleet of equipment, trucks, and supplies to assist Carriacou Island. Their
swift action and provision of vital resources are invaluable in helping the
island recover and rebuild.
The relief package included:
Relief Supplies |
- Relief Supplies:
- Rice
- Lentils
- Beans
- Cooking oil
- Toiletries
- Water
- Sanitary products
- Equipment List for Clearance Works:
- Excavator
- Wheel loader
- Backhoe loader
- Dump truck
- Water truck
Heavy Equipment |
To transport the heavy equipment, the Government of Grenada provided a barge, while the relief supplies were ferried aboard the Ferry Boat Osprey Express. This humanitarian gesture by Mr. Gajadhar underscores his commitment to supporting those in need whenever and wherever the need arises.
The initiative by Rayneau has garnered widespread support. Merina Thomas commented, “Great Rayneau, may God continue to grow your business and protect every employee and employer wherever you may go.”
Annette MaryAnne Giraud added, “Good Job Rayneau!!! But start by helping those that are desperately in need...the single moms without a proper home, elderly persons...the most vulnerable people...Some houses are fully insured and they still beg for help, leaving those who really need it without a roof. I know what I am talking about, it happened here after Maria. People with insured homes got help from government and other organizations plus their insurance while those with little Kai Poul were left with blue Samaritans Purse tarp over their head!”
Sunil Kumar |
Rayneau Grenada is proud to be associated with the coordination of humanitarian efforts on the ground in Carriacou, supporting efforts on the island," said Sunil Pal. This statement reflects the company's dedication to helping the affected communities rebuild their lives after such a devastating event.
