However, according to the latest forecasts released by Colorado State University, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and The Weather Company, the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season is forecast to be more active than historical averages with regard to the number of named storms.

While the Colorado State University (CSU) Tropical Meteorology Project outlook headed by Dr. Phil Klotzbach is calling for an above-average number of named storms with 14 expected and forecasts an average number of hurricanes this year, with six expected in the Atlantic Basin, the NOAA issued its forecast at the end of May and called for:

• Eleven to 17 named storms – including April's Tropical Storm Arlene.
• Five to nine of which would become hurricanes.
• Two to four of which would become major hurricanes.

The Weather Company updated its seasonal forecast earlier in May and expects a total of 14 named storms – seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes

What does this mean for St Lucians? It means we may be in for some severe weather this hurricane season and that we should stop pontificating, get ready and be prepared.

The official Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through Nov. 30. Occasionally, storms can form outside those months as happened this year with Tropical Storm Arlene.

Hurricane Preparednes 1 - Stop that Roof Leak Now!

WARNING! If you have water stains that extend across ceilings or run down walls, the cause is probably a roof leak. 

If you have a roof leak, you'd better fix it immediately, even if it doesn't bother you much or you're getting a new roof next year. Even over a short time, small leaks can lead to big problems, such as mold, rotted framing and sheathing, and damaged ceilings.

Tracking down the leak is the hard part; the fixes are usually pretty easy. You can stop leaks yourself—no experience necessary. Here is how I tracked down and fixed a roof leak. Most leaks take only minutes to repair.

It was about 2:00 pm Saturday as I sat in the living room watching a soccer match when I heard the most ominous sound a homeowner can hear: Drip . . . Drip. To my chagrin, a rivulet of water was making its way down the open rafter and dripping on a single sofa just opposite to where I sat.

Stain in ceiling caused by leaky roof

In a jiffy I was up scouring for a bucket or pan to catch this dripping water which could have ruined my sofa. I traced the leak and saw where it was coming from.

I couldn’t do anything more about it right then, but as soon as the sun came out the next day, I hauled out my rickety old extension ladder and headed up to investigate the roof.

Roof leaks are tricky buggers – water can sneak under a headless nail, shingle or rotten galvanize at one end and snake its way along the underlayment before dripping into any room. 

Keep in mind that flat roofs don’t always leak in the same manner as roofs with more shape. Instead, you may find drip marks down a large area of your walls or a wet spot on the ceiling.

Even if your roof is well-maintained or fairly new, heavy rainfall is still a cause for concern. The areas of your roof that are prone to pooling water can lead to a leak during heavy rain.

Having marked the spot from inside, and someone  to poke the the area, I headed up to the roof armed with Ames Leak Stopper Rubberized Roof Patch from Rayneau to locate and patch that leaky spot. To my amazement, I found out that the galvanize nail head was loose and that this was the same with many other nails on the roof.  

I spread a coat of Ames leak Stopper Rubberized Roof Patch over every nail head on the roof.

Beat The Heat With a Fan From Rayneau !

Despite the number of storms and hurricanes predicted for June 1 to Nov 30, to further compound the season, St Lucians and other Caribbean residents, especially those in the southern area are warned to be prepared to deal with heat waves because they are going to be a feature of the 2017 rainy season.

Heatwaves can kill!  It can also place  you at risk of dehydration and its related effects which include dizziness and fainting spells.

A heat wave is a prolonged period of excessively hot weather, which may be accompanied by high humidity, especially in oceanic climate countries. While definitions vary, a heat wave is measured relative to the usual weather in the area and relative to normal temperatures for the season.

The heatwave warning was issued by Dr Simon Mason of the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH). Though heatwaves were never a focus of study in the islands, he said that data collected over the years are showing heat waves are becoming a real challenge. The CIMH is projecting that islands in the South of the Caribbean will receive less rain and hotter days during the Hurricane season.

Hurricane Preparedness - Is Your Mind In The Gutter?

The hurricane season officially starts today! It is most often the time when many families are reminded of the little and sometimes insignificant repairs which they have continuously put off. These projects involve guttering, roof leaks, galvanize or shingles replacement, drainage around the home, plastering, replacing sidings and the list goes on and on. Well look no further. We've got your back covered.  In today’s post we look at guttering.

Guttering:  Is your mind in the gutter? Well, it should be if you want to have a house that can withstand the elements. Rainwater is a natural element that can wreak havoc on a house if it’s not controlled by properly installed and maintained rain gutters.

When gutters aren't functioning properly, rainwater runs off the roof of the house and collects on the ground near the foundation. Heavy rains can result in standing pools of water, which can cause a multitude of problems. The importance of properly installed and maintained gutters can’t be stressed enough. Here are a few reasons:

•          Soil around the house is stabilized
•          Foundation problems can be avoided
•          Flooding under houses can be prevented
•          Erosion can be prevented and this preserves landscaping and turf
•          Water damage to siding can be prevented
•          Water staining on masonry can be prevented
•          Settling and cracking of sidewalks, patios and driveways can be lessened
•          Exterior doors can be preserved

Have your gutters checked to be sure they aren't pulling away from the house. If they are, talk to one of our Customer Sales Representative about changing the spikes holding the gutters to screws. Screws do a much better job of holding the gutters in place. And make sure your downspouts are clear and not blocked by leaves, and that the water from gutters, downspouts, and around the house flows at least 10 feet away from your house.

If you are cleaning the gutters yourself, make sure to check for rusted spots, dents and holes, broken gutter hangers, and disconnected joints. Repair or replace any problem areas.
