3 Safety Devices To Prevent Your Home Being a Holiday Fire Statistic

As families and friends come together to celebrate the Easter holidays, it is important that they consider fire safety. The holiday season brings decorations, celebrations and an increase in indoor cooking, all of which increases the risk of residential fires.

Sub-officer Franklin Francis at the Castries Fire Station says there are three main causes of home fires particularly during the Easter holiday weekend. Namely unattended cooking, electricity and candles and/or matches.

Cooking Fires
According to the St Lucia Fire Service, cooking is the top cause of holiday fires. "The most common culprit is food that’s left unattended, says Officer Francis. "It’s easy to get distracted;take a pot holder with you when you leave the kitchen as a reminder that you have something on the stove." He reiterated.
He continues, "Make sure to keep a kitchen fire extinguisher that’s rated for all types of fires and check that smoke detectors are functioning."

Electrical Fires
Bryan Charles, a certified electrician says that most electrical fires are caused by:
  • Faulty electrical outlets and old, outdated appliances. Other fires are started by faults in appliance cords, receptacles and switches.
  • Misuse of extension cords is another electrical fire cause. Appliances should be plugged directly into outlet and not plugged into an extension cord for any length of time.
  • Light fixtures, lamps and light bulbs are another common reason for electrical fires. Installing a bulb with a wattage that is too high for the lamps and light fixtures is a leading cause of electrical fires.
  • Outdated wiring often causes electrical fires.

Candle Fires
To reduce the danger, maintain about a foot of space between the candle and anything that can burn. Set candles on sturdy bases or cover with hurricane globes. Never leave flames unattended. Before bed, walk through each room to make sure candles are blown out. For atmosphere without worry, consider flameless LED candles.

3 Fire Safety Devices
Therefore, high on everyone’s shopping list should be:-

A smoke alarm - For a minimal fee a smoke detector can help you literally rest assured that a fire won't catch you sleeping. These potentially lifesaving devices could prove to be the best improvement you make to your home over the holiday weekend.

A Fire Extinguisher – You probably are aware that a smoke alarm is by far the best home-safety investment you can make. But you'd like to take the next step in fire protection. Perhaps you'd like to be able to fight a fire before it spreads through your home. Fire extinguishers can be a small but important part of the home fire safety plan. They can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or suppressing it until the fire department arrives.

Fire Gone - The Fire Gone Fire Extinguisher is a piece of equipment everyone should possess. This small aerosol can, could be the difference between life and death. The Fire Gone Fire Extinguisher delivers a strong targeted stream that goes right to the source of the fire coating it with firefighting foam. The extinguisher can be used on most electric, grease, fabric and wood fires.

“If you need to leave home, ensure that your house is safe from fires. You look at what may be able to cause a fire and try your best to eliminate the risk. Where electricity is concern, irons, ensure that they are properly turned off and in a safe place” says Officer Francis a Sub Officer at the Castries Fire Station.

6 Tips To Keep Your Home Safe This Easter

With incidents of house burglaries typically increasing over holiday periods, it is important for homeowners to ensure they implement precautionary measures to protect themselves and their homes this Easter.

When you look at your family and your home, you know you want them to be safe, always out of harm’s way. When you leave for work, you expect to come back to a smiling family and to a home that is secure. But as they say, hope is not a strategy.

A burglary or theft can lead to devastating consequences, both emotionally and financially.  While the financial loss may be recoverable, the trauma inflicted on your family and yourself may last forever. So take a minute and think about this; is this loss worth the risk?

According to a report obtained from PC 372 Robinson of the St Lucia Royal Police Force for the period 2012 – 2016, 5251 cases of burglary was reported with last year alone  recording 954 cases. Section 207 of the Criminal Code of Saint Lucia gives the following definition for Burglary.

St Lucia's Burglary Statistics
(1) A person commits the offence of burglary if;
he or she enters any building or part of a building as a trespasser with the intent to commit any offence under subsection (2); or

having entered any building or part of a building as a trespasser he or she steals or attempts to steal anything in the building or part of it or inflicts or attempts to inflict on the person therein any grievous bodily harm.

2) The offences referred to in subsection (1) (a) are offences of;
  •   stealing anything in the building or part of the building in question;
  •   inflicting on the person in the building any grievous bodily harm;
  •   raping a woman in the building;
  •  doing unlawful damage to the building or anything in the building.
Now, there’s no need to lose sleep over this… however, every homeowner should take the necessary preventative steps to reduce their odds of being affected by crime.

Here are some simple tips to increase your overall home security and deter burglars from entering your home.

Solar Motion  Activated Light
Install Motion activated lights
The best defense is a good offense! Homeowners rarely fully comprehend the true value exterior lights have for helping as an added security measure. Keep in mind that a criminal is looking for a place to burglarize or vandalize that is not going to be easy to be detected. Even if you would rather not have bright lights shining outside your home at all times to deter criminal activity, a simple, yet effective method is to illuminate the shadowed parts of your home and access points, consider adding motion-activated lights as a deterrent instead.

Recommendations: 1 - Super 50 LEDs Solar Motion Activated Light.
                             2 – Halogen Security Floodlight

Control Master Electronic Timer
Add Electronic Timers
The goal here is to make it appear as if your home is occupied at all times. Electronic timers are the perfect way to maintain normal light patterns when you’re away. Having your lights on or off at all times, with no variation may be a surefire clue that you’re not home and make your home a target. Similar types of timers can also be used to turn radios or televisions on and off and open/close curtains and drapes.

Use social media wisely
Don’t inadvertently put your home security in jeopardy by promoting your absence on social media. Parents should be vigilant about their children’s social media habits and take time out to discuss safe online behaviour. Tell children not to reveal holiday plans or geo-tag snaps on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram – this gives savvy thieves up-to-the-minute details on your whereabouts, and clues about when the home is likely to be vacant. So, you’ve got to think like a burglar and always be one step ahead of them!

Recommendation: Control Master Electronic Timer

Outdoor camera
Mount Security cameras
Another great way to deter burglars from targeting your home is to record their every move. However, with so many different kinds of home security cameras in the market, deciding which one to install in your home can be a daunting task. In simple terms, you will need an indoor and/or outdoor security camera with night vision and face recognition features.

There are cameras that have the ability to send the names of the people it sees directly to your smartphone and can store your videos for free, locally or on the cloud, on any device. You can even be notified when your children are home or when it recognizes a stranger – spying made easy! (Need one?Talk to us about your needs)

Alarm systems
Set up Alarm systems

Why do we need a home alarm system? A home alarm system is one of the top ways to protect your home. Having a good home alarm system will lessen or definitely decrease the chance of intruders and thieves from getting into your house.

Recommendations:  1 – Westek Motion Sensor Alarm
2 - Westek Driveway and Entry Alert
Remember the simple things
Simple tasks such as locking your doors every time you go out and even while you’re home are often taken lightly and make it that much easier to invite unwanted guests into your home. Burglars get into your home via the door or a window, so having a visibly sturdy lock is the first step towards home security. Visit Rayneau today. Our CSRs would be happy to recommend the strongest locks for your home. They will have a wide variety ranging from sturdy dead bolt locks to knob locks and even padlocks.

Follow the steps above and you’ll be living in a crime proofed home in no time!

Upgrade Your Home Lighting With LED Bulbs

With the constantly rising costs of energy, we all want to try and save as much money as possible in lighting our homes and businesses. To help you achieve this, you need to make informed choices. Comparing various types of lighting such as LED light, compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) and incandescent bulbs enables you to see which offer the most benefits and is the most cost-effective.

Incandescent Lights

Just a couple decades ago, light bulbs were light bulbs. No matter your budget, you really had only one choice when it came to interior lighting options for your home: Head to the hardware store and pick up some incandescent bulbs, choosing wattage based on how bright you needed the light to be.

But in recent years, technology has brought us bulbs — namely, CFLs and LEDs — that put incandescent lighting to shame. Not only are these new options more energy efficient, they can also last years, or even decades, longer than the standard light bulb we all remember from our childhoods.

LED Lights
There are many benefits to switching your standard incandescent bulbs to energy efficient LED bulbs. Making this simple switch will have a positive and lasting impact on your home.
·         The primary advantage of using LED bulbs is they have a long lifespan. LED bulbs have a life time expectation of up to 100,000 hours (conventional bulbs have an expectation of 1,000 hours).
·         LED bulbs are also energy efficient using a very small amount of energy to run. LED bulbs operate at 80% efficiency meaning 80% of the electrical energy is converted to light (traditional incandescent bulbs operate at 20% efficiency.

·       LEDs are also environmentally friendly as they are free of toxic chemicals and are 100% recyclable. They are also extremely durable and built to withstand tough conditions.
·       Another important benefit to the LEDs is improved light dispersement. LEDs are able to focus light and direct light to a specific spot.

CFL Lights
LED bulbs of many sizes and varieties are available in our Electrical Department. So if you want all of the benefits and features that a quality light bulb can offer and still be a great energy and cost saver, make sure that the LED light bulb is at the top of your list.

You don’t have to make a huge commitment now. If you want, you can upgrade to more efficient lighting one room at a time, or as old light bulbs burn out. Or start with installing an LED light bulb in a hard-to-reach spot, since you won’t have to replace it for many, many years.

5 Tips - How To Save Water At Home

The Lenten season officially began on March 1, 2017 and traditionally it is the time when numerous warnings are issued by the lone water company to ration water due to dry weather conditions and the low water levels at their reservoirs.

While the water company has not issued a formal dry spell warning at this time certain officials believe that consumers should be wary and use water more carefully, particularly when it comes to lawn watering, vehicle washing and other unessential uses. The aim is to moderate water demand through voluntary conservation.

The majority of water usage is done indoors, accounting for approximately 93% of the overall water usage at home. This includes toilets, personal washing, kitchen, clothes washing.

Here are 5 tips to help you work your way through any dry spell.

Install water-efficient faucets
Water efficient faucets
Water-efficient faucets and faucet accessories (such as aerators) are high-performing, water-efficient fixtures that will help you save water, energy, and money.
Simply turning off your tap when brushing your teeth can save as much as 3,000 gallons of water per year.

You can conserve even more by installing water-efficient bathroom sink faucets or faucets accessories, an average household can save up to 700 gallons each year per faucet. Since these water savings will reduce demands on water heaters, households will also save energy.

Recommendations: Aqualux Vienna Collection Satin  Nickel faucet
                            Brushed Nickel Plated Basin Faucet
Aqua Plumb 4-inch fancy Chrome Lavatory Faucet with teapot handles

Install a water-efficient showerhead

Low flow and Aerated  Showerheads
You can save over 10,000 litres of water per person each year by installing a water efficient showerhead, (based on a seven minute shower average).
  • Aerated showerheads reduce the flow but don’t compromise on pressure. They maintain the pressure by mixing in air with water to produce a steady, even spray.
  • Low flow showerheads reduce the amount of water used, whilst still giving you the feel of a normal shower.
Recommendations: Danze Sunflower Brass Showerhead/Pollenex Plus Microban Showerhead

Install a dual flush toilet

Water-saving Toilets
For a family of four, installing a dual flush toilet can save more than 35,000 litres of water a year.
  •          Dual flush toilets have a split flush button which gives the user the choice of how much water to use
  •          Dual flush toilets typically use 4-6 litres of water opposed to the old style flush systems which use a massive 13 litres per flush.
Recommendation: Zurn 2-piece 1.6 GPF Dual Flush Pressure Assist Elongated Toilet

Repair leaks in fixtures such as toilets and faucets and avoid letting the water run unnecessarily for other household uses in the kitchen and bathroom.

Install a rainwater tank

Water Tanks
Capturing rainwater to use in your garden is an excellent way to reduce the amount of drinking water you use from the tap. Tanks are available in a various sizes and styles so before you buy, speak with our CSRs to determine which tank is best for your needs.
