Jolt Your Lawn Back To Life With These 6 Simple Steps From Shakym

Were you recently impressed with the upkeep of a lawn as you drove past a house on your way home from work or while taking your daily jog? Were you also taken aback by the lush green, thick and neatly cut and weed free grass? Then look no further and head to our Lawn and Garden Department and speak with Shakym, our Customer Sales Representative, who will get you started on the path to your dream lawn - he is dedicated to his work and will give you this "wow" tour of his department to locate your lawn necessities. Further, it's the rainy season, so what better time to start reviving your lawn than now.

Shakym - Sales Rep in Lawn & Garden Dept.
Let’s face it: your yard is an important extension of your home and with today's busy schedules, low maintenance care is key. When you live in the suburbs, a healthy, well-kept lawn is a must says Shakym. He is also of the opinion that before anyone even steps into your house, it’s your front lawn that makes the first impression of your home.

"Achieving a lush lawn doesn't have to be a constant struggle. And you don't have to pay big bucks for a lawn service to douse your yard with chemicals either. Growing healthy, green grass is mainly just a matter of knowing what to give your lawn, and when to give it." Shakym says

"At Rayneau, we can help you with the right advice and the right products to ensure you get the results you are looking for. Keeping your lawn lush, green and weed free can be accomplished with the right lawn equipment. You’ll find everything you need to cultivate a healthy lawn from the roots up in our Lawn and Garden Department.
It takes work, but it is not impossible to give your lawn a facelift." He continues.

Shakym believes that if you follow these steps it will help to wake up a tired lawn:
  • Step 1 - Clear lawn of thatch and weeds
Ortho® Weed B Gon® Weed Killer For Lawns
Thatch and weeds can be an ongoing problem that keeps your lawn from living up to its potential. Thatch is an almost impenetrable mat of tangled, intertwined grass and other material on the ground surface. Removing thatch helps you get the best from your lawn. To prevent thatch, keep leaves raked and remove some of the grass clippings after mowing.

Eliminate weeds in your lawn and prevent their return by maintaining healthy grass, using a minimum of weed killers and good timing

  •  Step 2 - Level up the Lawn

Lawn and Garden Accessories
One of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to lawns is how to level a lawn. The best time to fill uneven lawn low spots is during vigorous growth, which usually depends on the type of grass grown. Sand is oftentimes used to level lawns but putting sand on lawns can cause problems. Avoid putting sand on a lawn by itself. Using a dry topsoil and sand mix is much better for leveling uneven areas than putting sand on a lawn without mixing.
You can easily make your own lawn patching soil by mixing sand and dry topsoil in equal parts of half-and-half, spreading the leveling mix into low-lying areas of the lawn. Some people also use compost, which is great for enriching the soil. Only add one-half inch of soil mix to the low spots at a time, leaving any existing grass showing through.
After leveling, fertilize lightly and water the lawn thoroughly
  • Step 3 - Feed the lawn

Lawn fertilizer
The trick to a beautifully lush lawn is the application of the right fertilizer at the right time. Fertilizers give plants essential nutrients to survive and thrive. All lawn fertilizers contain three primary nutrients that are labeled in this sequence on the packaging: nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium (NPK).
  • Nitrogen (N) promotes rapid growth and lush green color.
  • Phosphorous (P) helps develop healthy root systems.
  • Potassium (K) boosts the overall health of your grass

Fertilizing your lawn at the right time will help ensure the grass is getting fed when it is most beneficial for the turf. It is recommended that the months April – August are the best months to fertilize your lawn while grass is growing and storing nutrients.
  • Step 4 - Make the lawn breathe again.

Lawn & Garden tools
Aeration can be an extremely vital element to a healthy lawn because it allows air and water to penetrate built-up grass or lawn thatch.
Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. This helps the roots grow deeply and produce a stronger, more vigorous lawn.
To aerate the lawn you can use a spike aerator, you simply use the tool to poke holes into the ground with a solid tine, or fork. (photo on the left)

  • Step 5 - Prepare and overseed the lawn.

Lawn seeds
Overseeding is one of the most important tasks involved in growing a healthy, lush lawn. Over time, lawns that have not been overseeded will grow thin and unhealthy, making it much easier for weeds to overtake the lawn.
Many experts in lawn care recommend the months  June – August as the ideal months for over-seeding 'tired', worn or drought damaged lawns. Sowing your grass seed is very easy, follow this simple steps and soon you will have a lawn that will turn your neighbours green with envy.
  1. Rake or scarify the existing lawn
  2. Spread the seeds
  3. Tread the seeds into the lawn
It's best to try and keep of the lawn area for around 6 weeks after sowing. This is to allow the seeds a chance to get established
  • Step 6 - Caring for the young plants.
Lawn watering set
So, you've recently planted some new grass seed. But now you're wondering, What am I supposed to do next? Not to worry. Your work to this point will be in vain if you do not care for the young grass plants as the seeds germinate and begin to grow. After you've planted your grass seed, continue to water it at least twice a day assuming no rain. Once your new grass is established, you can go back to a normal watering routine.

2 Primary ReasonsTo Paint The Interior Of Your Home

Michael Sebastien
I recently posed this question to Michael Sebastien, our Customer Sales Representative in the Paints and Sundries Department. Why should you paint rooms on the interior of a house? “You will be better able to answer this question when the paint job is completed.” He answered. “At that time you will be proud of the beautiful new rooms that you have created. An interior paint job makes the home more attractive, clean, fresh and beautiful, as if it was brand new! Nothing improves the appearance of the home better than a fresh paint job.”

“Another reason to paint an interior is to increase the value of a home. If you intend on selling your house, it will almost always sell shortly after the application of the paint job, and for a higher price than it would have before. If you have  a vacant home that has been on the market for a long time with no offers, a new coat of paint almost always sells the home within a couple of months .”

When asked about preparations for a painting job, Michael was precise with his answers. “Before you paint there may be holes or cracks in the walls and ceiling. Also furniture often makes unattractive marks on the walls. You may need to compound, sand and prime the walls before starting.” He believes that a good interior house painting totally transforms a home. One of the greatest pleasures he takes in his job he says, is that he loves to create and mix paint colours. “I love to see how good it makes the customers feel when the colour comes out just right. They are always thrilled and grateful for what I have produced.”

To carry out a successful paint job, Michael says you will need the following which are in stock at our store:-
  •          Tape,
  •          drop cloth,
  •          paint try,
  •          paint rollers and refills,
  •          ladder,
  •          small brushes
  •          Paint

At the Department, Michael makes mention of an array of colours to match your every mood. “We’ve grouped our colours into four mood–inspired collections that are guaranteed to harmonize well – Calm, Luxurious, Fresh and Warm.” The sales rep reiterated.

Calm Colours create a calm, cool and sophisticated atmosphere he says. Calm colours:-
  •          Create space in a room.
  •          Give a room that serene, quiet and peaceful feeling of nostalgia.
  •          Add a breezy quality to the space.
  •          Provide the feeling of freshness and radiance.
  •          Work well in bedrooms, bathrooms and living rooms.

In our continued discussion about moods and colours with regards to paints, the young man thinks that the deep tones of luxurious colours are able to create relaxing and embracing areas with dramatic atmospheres. Reds, Deep Blues, Oranges, and Greens add that touch of class and luxury to any space.

Fresh colours he continues “are used to adjust the temperatures in a room and work well in those rooms where there are lots of natural sunlight, while warm colours bring a level of sophistication and subtlety that create a perfect place to retreat to and relax.”  Fresh and warm colours are effective in kitchens/bathrooms and living rooms respectively.

These colours fall in the realm of different shades of reds, blues, greens and yellows

With Father’s Day just around the corner, don’t you want to make dad’s room stand out? Come down to our store and present any colour and we will match it to your satisfaction.

At RCIP Ltd we have a cutting edge Spectrophotometer that can scan a wide range of samples and generate the perfect formula. You can choose from the colour of your new curtains, the shade of your favourite flower or a colour from another paint manufacturer and Michael will find the perfect match in the Ultimate finish!

CIE Ltd Blast Off On Major Project

Artist concept of the Complex upon Completion
Ground works have started on building an EC$64 million, 75,000 square foot administrative complex in Vieux Fort that will serve residents of the south.
The sod turning ceremony was held at the project site on April 20, 2016. During that ceremony Mr Gajadhar, team leader of the company Construction and Industrial Equipment Ltd (CIE Ltd), who has been contracted to construct this mammoth building reiterated "I feel really good as being part of this. This project is going to be good for Vieux Fort and good for St Lucia ………we have to make sure it comes out very well so that all can be very proud of it.”

Interview - project manager
The site is presently buzzing with activity as excavation works are being undertaken to build internal roads, the car park and taking care of some landscaping as well. According to Roy Stan, site project manager, “We have completed squaring the topsoil and right now we are  now putting the primary roads in place. Presently we are dealing with the car park area and the primary roads and adding material for the sub-base.” The primary roads are a vital link for transportation of equipment and materials to the different sections on the work site.

Excavation Process
At the moment the top soil has been excavated and sill is being placed to level with the embankment. The existing gutter which separates the whole site into two sections will be converted into a retention pond and over it will be two bridges – one at the front and the other at the back to connect the two areas, namely main car park and building.
According to Roy the construction will include three buildings – A,B and C. Buildings A will be the one closest to the road and will be the main building to access the other two. Building C and B will be built diagonally and parallel respectively to the Vieux Fort/Micoud Highway.

An existing pond which is located at the back nearest to the school will be re-designed and made more eco-friendly to add to the ambiance and aesthetics of the whole administrative complex. The Project manager concluded.

He continued, that a section Vieux Fort–Micoud Highway near the front of the proposed building will be redesigned to accommodate two roundabouts – one on the compounds itself, and the other on the highway where a walkway will be constructed to accommodate pedestrians.

A view at the work site

Approximately twenty men are on site in the initial stages but the numbers are expected to increase significantly in the coming months .

Upon completion of the project, which is due in 2018, a number of basic services will become available to residents in the south of Saint Lucia, thanks to a project being undertaken by the Government of Saint Lucia, in partnership with the National Insurance Corporation (NIC).
