As Rayneau’s Hurricane Awareness Week (May 26 - June 1) kicks off today, it is crucial to heed the predictions from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. Forecasters are predicting an 85% chance of an above-normal hurricane season for the Caribbean this year, with a range of 17 to 25 named storms, of which 8 to 13 could become hurricanes, and 4 to 7 may develop into major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).

This elevated hurricane activity is influenced by several significant factors. Near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, the development of La Nina conditions in the Pacific, reduced Atlantic trade winds, and less wind shear create a favorable environment for tropical storm formation. As these conditions converge, the likelihood of more frequent and intense storms increases.

The 2024 hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and NOAA's comprehensive outlook underscores the importance of preparedness. As  our National Emergency Managemennt Organisation (NEMO)  advises, "Severe weather and emergencies can happen at any moment, which is why individuals and communities need to be prepared today."

MOLINIERE MAIN ROAD NEARS COMPLETION: A BEACON OF HOPE FOR ST GEORGES GRENADA.

.Exciting news for the residents and businesses of St. Georges, Grenada! The long-awaited completion of the Moliniere Main Road is now expected to be just five months before scheduled time. After nearly five years of significant inconveniences caused by extensive road slippage, the end is finally in sight.

A recent update from a Grenada Government official confirms that the project, overseen by the Trinidad-based Beston company, is on track for completion by the final quarter of this year. Rayneau Construction and Industrial Equipment (CIE) Ltd, the contractor for the project, has made substantial progress, much to the satisfaction of the Prime Minister and his entourage during a recent site visit.

Mr. Joshua, a spokesperson for the Government Information Service, provided a comprehensive update during the Prime Minister's visit. He highlighted that the team is working tirelessly to ensure the project's timely completion. "Thus far, we have completed construction on the foundation, which included over 100 piles driven into the bedrock. On top of that, we constructed a geowall with reinforced earth layers forming the base of the structure. At the top, we've completed the base slab with 17 wall stems already constructed," Joshua explained.

The next stage involves casting the suspended slab, a crucial step expected to be completed this year, weather permitting. Joshua also spoke about the structural design, emphasizing the incorporation of cells to facilitate efficient clearance of fallen material, ensuring long-term stability.

Prime Minister Hon. Deon Mitchell expressed his satisfaction with the progress. "We are hoping, all things being equal, by October or November, most of the work will be completed. The citizens of the Western and Northern parts of the island can return to normalcy regarding transportation and traffic in this area," said the Prime Minister.

The Moliniere main road has been closed since December 16, 2019, due to extensive deterioration. The road's closure has resulted in traffic being re-routed through the village of Mt. Moritz, with some residents forced to vacate the area as widening cracks threatened their homes and businesses.

With the end of this challenging period in sight, the completion of the Moliniere Main Road promises to bring much-needed relief and a return to normalcy for St. George's residents and motorists. As the final touches are made, the community eagerly anticipates the reopening of this critical roadway, marking a significant milestone in Grenada's infrastructure development.
