ST. JUDE HOSPITAL FIRE SAFETY CLEARANCE MARKS MAJOR MILESTONE IN RECONSTRUCTION JOURNEY

The long-awaited St. Jude Hospital reconstruction has reached a defining moment, moving one step closer to completion after passing a rigorous fire safety inspection by the St. Lucia Fire Service. This critical sign-off marks a turning point for the hospital, once scarred by tragedy, now reborn under a new era of advanced safety and engineering excellence.

A Triumph of Modern Standards and Vigilance

The final inspection, led by Chief Fire Officer Didi Downs and Assistant Divisional Officer for Fire Prevention Owen Kasebo, confirmed that the hospital not only meets but in many areas exceeds international safety standards. Every fire alarm, emergency exit, and protective system was put to the test.

Kasebo outlined the depth of the review, explaining:

“We tested our passive and active fire protection systems — the alarm network, smoke dumpers, extinguishers, emergency lighting, and water riser systems. These were not present before the previous fire. This time, we ensured a robust standard of safety so that both occupants and responders are protected.”

The St. Lucia Fire Service also took the opportunity to test their new firefighting equipment directly at the site. According to Downs,

“We are confident that if there is an issue at the hospital, our department will be able to respond effectively. The facility is now fully insulated in terms of firefighting apparatus.”

From Past Tragedy to Future Readiness

This inspection represents far more than a procedural green light — it is symbolic of progress after years of delays, setbacks, and reconstruction challenges. With the certificate of operation now approved from a firefighting perspective, St. Jude Hospital has cleared one of the final hurdles before full commissioning.

However, as Kasebo reminded, safety is an ongoing process:

“The systems must be maintained, and staff must be trained. In the event of a fire, they should be the first responders — equipped, alert, and ready.”

A New Chapter for Healthcare and Construction Excellence

Backed by a US$75 million loan from the Saudi Fund for Development in 2024, the St. Jude Hospital Reconstruction Project has been revitalized with modern design principles, improved fire resilience, and cutting-edge systems. Located at the original Augier–Vieux Fort site, the project is now in its final stage, with efforts focused on equipping the facility for full operation.
